What Is Cosmetic Dentistry?

Cosmetic dentistry is focused on improving the appearance of your smile. In particular, cosmetic services improve the look of your mouth, gums, and visible teeth. The goal is to give you more confidence in your appearance when you speak and smile.

Lake Michigan Dental is committed to enhancing your smile by using state-of-the-art techniques for everything from teeth whitening and veneers to dental bonding and Invisalign®. We use the most advanced modern procedures to offer you and your family a variety of options to brighten your teeth and improve your appearance.

Our safe and effective cosmetic dental services include treatments such as:

Teeth Whitening

Have you tried using teeth whitening toothpaste and strips at home with little to no success? You may have better luck scheduling an appointment for teeth whitening at our office. We perform professional teeth whitening procedures for patients who want a brighter, more attractive smile.

Teeth whitening treatments are one of the most popular cosmetic dental procedures used to make teeth whiter, brighter, and more attractive. They can help if your smile is stained, discolored, or dull.

Our teeth whitening dentists offer two main types of teeth whitening services: at-home and in-office.

If you’re interested in at-home teeth whitening, we can create a customized teeth whitening tray for your smile. You’ll be able to use this tray from the comfort and convenience of your home to whiten your smile on your own time. Trays from our office are more effective than the ones you can buy in the store because they are customized to your teeth.

You can also choose in-office teeth whitening instead. In-office teeth whitening allows us to use a stronger bleaching solution so you can achieve a brighter, whiter smile faster.

Invisalign®

Lake Michigan Dental is a certified Invisalign® provider. This means we can use Invisalign for patients who would like a straighter, healthier smile without relying on traditional metal braces.

If you’ve always wanted a straighter smile, you may want to ask if Invisalign clear aligners are the right choice for your smile.

Like the name suggests, Invisalign aligners are nearly invisible braces that move your teeth into optimal alignment over time.

Invisalign is a great option for patients who want to improve the appearance of their smile without unsightly metal braces. In particular, many of our adult patients appreciate the subtlety of Invisalign when they go to work or meet with friends.

Invisalign clear aligners are also removable, although you will need to wear them 20 to 22 hours a day for them to work as intended. This means that you can take out the aligners during meal times, allowing you to eat and drink whatever you want during treatment. It also means you can take your aligners out for short, important events, such as giving a presentation at work.

One of our dentists will come up with a custom treatment plan for your specific case.

During the course of your treatment, you will wear several sets of aligners (between 18 and 30), one for each phase of alignment. Each set of clear aligners will only be worn for about two weeks at a time. Then, we’ll replace it with a slightly different set of aligners. This process helps move your teeth little by little into correct alignment.

You will need to come to our office every six weeks during treatment so we can check your progress. On average, Invisalign treatment takes between nine and 15 months.

Self-discipline is one of the most important characteristics you will need to be a good candidate for Invisalign.

Since clear aligners can be taken out, you must be disciplined enough to keep wearing them each day. You’ll also need to brush your teeth after every meal to prevent your aligners from yellowing due to food particles and bacteria. Additionally, when you’re not wearing your aligners, you’ll need to keep them safe in their case so you don’t risk throwing them away after meals.

There are other factors that will determine if you’re a good candidate for Invisalign, such as the current alignment of your teeth. Our Invisalign dentists will evaluate your specific case and help you determine if Invisalign clear aligners are right for you.

Porcelain Veneers

Do you feel self-conscious about gaps or chipped teeth that show when you smile? You may want to consider getting porcelain veneers. Our dentists can help you get the smile of your dreams with this simple cosmetic procedure.

Veneers are thin, customized shells made of tooth-colored porcelain that cover the fronts of your teeth. Cosmetic dentists use porcelain veneers for patients who have minor cosmetic issues with their smile, such as worn enamel or slightly misaligned teeth.

The porcelain veneers procedure requires two visits.

During your first visit, our dentists will take X-rays. We will also file down the fronts of the teeth that will receive the veneers. This helps your veneers appear and function naturally, instead of feeling and looking bulky in your mouth. Once your receiving teeth have been filed down, we will take dental impressions of your smile. Then, we’ll send these impressions to the lab that will make your custom porcelain veneers.

During your second visit, your porcelain veneers will be ready. Our cosmetic dentists will ensure the fit, shape, and color of your new veneers look natural. Then, we will bond the veneers to the surface of your teeth.

With proper care, your new dental veneers can last up to 15 years.

Cosmetic Bonding

Cosmetic bonding is a quick, affordable option for patients with teeth that are damaged, discolored, or have gaps. Our dentists can use bonding to help you achieve the smile of your dreams.

Dental bonding involves applying tooth-colored restorations directly to your smile to effectively repair or restore the shape and feel of your teeth. This can usually be completed in a single dental appointment.

Cosmetic bonding is a good option for patients who have minor cosmetic issues with their smile. It improves the appearance of teeth that are:

  • Chipped
  • Broken
  • Cracked
  • Stained
  • Uneven
  • Gapped

We can also use dental bonding in conjunction with other cosmetic procedures. For example, we can use enamel shaping to remove or contour enamel in combination with cosmetic bonding.
